Tài Hǎo Le! – Ruminations on Chinese 101

with 2 comments

Mandarin lesson book

Today I had my last Integrated Chinese 101 class. It was great! Tài hǎo le! (Great!)

Ken and I took the non-credit course from the Confucius Institute at Renison College (UW). We learned several basic Mandarin phrases and sentence structure. By the end of the course, I could write a page long letter (in Chinese characters) to our instructor. I was really impressed by the amount that I learned! Of course, it’s all very basic, but definitely a great start.

Test and updates

without comments

Hey how’s it going? I’m just testing some stuff out. While I’m at it, I’d better let y’all know what’s been going on.

Well, in the last month we had the ece design symposium and i’ve been keeping myself busy with school projects and stuff. Midterms are coming up and I have my first one this Thursday. Networking…nice. Next week is reading week and I’m heading to Montreal with Jen and my friends. Well, that was a nice stream of a bunch of sentences strung together, but hey, this post originally was going to be “testing 1,2,3…”.

Here are some topics I’ve been thinking about writing about but am probably too lazy to get around to: ece design symposium, my Microsoft interview from December, and how my new iPhone rocks. Stay tuned! (but don’t hold your breath… Hah)

Thanksgiving Weekend and Black Saturday

with one comment

My American Thanksgiving weekend started off on Wednesday night with a feast at Wallace’s place! He cooked up a really nice turkey and everything to go with it. It felt really good to sit down and have a home-cooked meal with a bunch of other friends and interns. Since Jing (my roommate) and I weren’t going out of town for the weekend, we were “blessed” with the leftovers. That means turkey for the next 3 or 4 meals… yay (lol)! It was a very good meal, but one can only eat so much turkey ;) .

On Friday, Tim and his cousin Judy came to San Diego to visit! We went out for lunch and then over to La Jolla Shores to do some kayaking! We didn’t explicitly plan on doing it, so when we hit the water, we were dressed in lifejackets and our long (rolled up) jeans. In the first 5 minutes I was drenched… lol. But it was still a lot of fun out on the water. We paddled for a while before we decided to head in. On the way back to shore, an unexpected wave landed our kayak on a rock and we got stuck! But have no fear, Tim jumped out and pushed the craft to shore. Kayaking turned out to be quite the adventure.

Afterwards, Tim, Judy and I headed to Downtown San Diego and we explored the Gaslamp District before finding a Mexican restaurant for dinner. Had a great day and it was nice to have Tim come and visit me out here. Thanks Tim!

Black Saturday

On Saturday, Jing and I ventured back to San Ysidro near Mexico to hit the shopping outlets. I had already ordered a couple Black Friday electronics off of Amazon, so this trip was mainly to look for deals on clothes and all that crap. The outdoor mall was bustling with shoppers looking for good buys, and I joked to Jing, “I feel the economy getting… STRONGERRRRR!”. And so it was [Bloomberg].

Well that’s all for now. Hopefully you won’t have to wait another full month for an update!  But if you’re wondering what I’m up to on a more micro-blog scale, try following me on twitter.com/danhadi.
