Innovation @ UWaterloo – 2010 ECE Design Symposium

The annual UWaterloo Electrical and Computer Engineering Design Symposium took place today at the school’s Davis Centre in Waterloo. Having had my turn at the Design Symposium last year, I was really interested to see what students have come up with this time. I had a chance to look around at the projects and talk with these students and I am really impressed with all they’ve done. There was a ton of innovation on display today.
I had a great time talking with all these bright students. I spent so much time talking to them that I only got around to seeing about 50% of all the booths! It was really interesting to find out how to put their systems together and I learned so much from the short exhibition time.
Read on to see some of the projects.
Calling All Canadians
Living (far) away from home, I haven’t heard too much about Canadian news. For example: did you know there’s an federal ELECTION coming up? Yes, that’s right. In just under a month, Canadians will elect a new Prime Minister. Its a very expedited process compared to the long, drawn-out, year-long presidential campaign going on here in the States.
So, for those of you still in the Great White North, you carry on your business and go to the polls on voting day – Oct 14th. For those of you like me, who are outside Canada and wish to vote, there’s a few things you need to do:
- Visit the Elections Canada website – Voting by Mail page
- Follow the steps to determine eligibility
- Fill out the Vote By Mail registration form, and send supporting documentation to Elections Canada via mail. Applications must be received by Oct 7, 2008.
- Once you have successfully registered, Elections Canada will mail you a special ballot kit, which you will use to vote. Ballots must be received in Ottawa by Oct 14, 2008

News about Microsoft’s bid to buy out Yahoo! has been circulating the net. Wow, so they’re actually trying to buy them out. Yahoo was one of Microsoft’s largest rivals…in the late 90’s. Then things just went downhill over there. Yahoo lost their way a long time ago. Google was crowned the internet search king as the company faded into non-consequence. What has Yahoo brought to the tech table lately? Yet another social network? Let’s see what Microsoft will do.
